In honor of Women’s History Month this March, we are featuring some of the women who make up Virtue Cider. These women work in production, commercial, and farming operations; all are a part of every glass of Virtue Cider. Take a moment to learn a bit about what they all do, and if you see any of them at Virtue, please say hello! Here is Tara Gillies, our quality manager.
Tara Gillies, Quality Manager
How long have you been at Virtue Cider and what is your role?
3 years as quality manager. I started Virtue’s quality program!
What is your background?
I’m from Grand Rapids, MI. I got my Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology. After that I moved to Washington State and did post grad research at a winery that was part of WSU. I came back to MI and worked in food safety R&D before coming to Virtue
What do you like about working at Virtue Cider?
I loved getting to seeing/tasting the whole cidermaking process. From testing the incoming apples, monitoring them during fermentation and then having them go into a final blend. Every day is a little different with a good mix of R&D and quality.
About being a woman in your industry:
Never be afraid to stand up for yourself and speak your mind. Luckily our cidermaking team is like a bunch of big brothers to me. Sometimes we fight like siblings, but I always feel comfortable bringing up any issues quality related or other.
What’s your favorite cider?
Fun random fact:
Being a science/fermentation nerd I make my own yogurt and have had the same culture going for over 4 years. Is that too weird? Haha. I also have a dog and a rabbit.
Stay tuned for our next installment of Women of Virtue! International Women’s Day is March 8.
