August Events at Virtue Cider

The apple harvest is just around the corner, and we are relishing the mid-summer weather with a month-long celebration of local ingredients. Here's what you can discover when you visit Virtue Cider this month.

As with each month throughout the spring and summer, we will host a First Thursday Market on Aug. 2. This month's highlight is the Textiles Market & Sheep-Shearing Day. Our Icelandic sheep help maintain our grasslands, and in turn, we get to enjoy their beautiful wool for yarn and other goods. Stop by the Cider House from 6-8pm to shop from local apparel vendors and makers. The Press Delete will also play a live set on the Virtue Cider Stage.

All during August, we're celebrating local ingredients that are enjoyed in the late summer. On August 4 and 5 we'll kick off the Summer Harvest Celebration with Honey Fest featuring our cider of the month, Michigan Honey. Come by the Tasting Room for honey cider flights (ask for a porron of it!), honey-themed treats from our Tasting Room food window, and local honey for sale from our Bottle Shop. We'd have no fruit at all if it weren't for the bees, so let's honor them at Honey Fest!

This season we've been hosting monthly open-air concerts on the Virtue Cider Stage. Our Farm Tunes series continues with special guests Bones Jugs on Saturday, Aug. 4. Music starts at 7pm, and a $10 suggested donation goes directly to the artist. Join us for sunset sounds and cider.

On August 11 and 12 we'll continue our Summer Harvest Celebration with Pickle Fest. Swing by the Tasting Room for cider pints and learn how cider becomes cider vinegar and how that makes for excellent pickling liquid for preserving a harvest's bounty. Cider also pairs great with pickled foods!

On Saturday, August 18, we will host a cookout with Doug Sohn, of Hot Doug's fame. We'll have more details soon, but save the date for a late summer cookout with the king of encased meats himself. Entry is free, and food will be available for purchase on-site. DJ Dr. Joel will provide the tunes, spinning a selection of vinyl.

We love learning from our neighbors, and now you can too at our Farm Chats series this summer. On Thursday, Aug. 23, our friends at JAMD Farms from Muskegon, Mich., will discuss processing grass into hay, baleage, and how this practice helps maintain grounds and supplement farm animals.

This summer we installed some hand-made communal tables crafted by Grand Rapids-based Brace & Chisel. We invite you to our table to enjoy a Community Communal Brunch on Sunday, Aug. 26, in our fields on the farm at Virtue Cider. We'll enjoy a family-style brunch with cheese and charcuterie, pastries, sausages, and crudités. The brunch will include cider and coffee from our friends at Uncommon Coffee Roasters. A portion of the event's proceeds will benefit Allegan Food Pantry. Tickets for this 21+ event are available on Eventbrite.

Finally, this week we launched a new tour booking tool online to make it easy to sign up for a production tour or guided tasting, as well as a new online shop to grab a gift for that cider lover in your life, even if that's you! Our hours this season are Sunday to Wednesday, noon to 7pm, and Thursday to Saturday, noon to 8pm. Hope to see you this month!
